Garden Design with Storage/Shed Wimbledon

The design brief for this project in South Wimbledon had to include attending to one significant practical challenge – storage. Garden storage in Wimbledon is a big challenge for many clients with small urban gardens in South West London. In this case, our clients had used an old garage for storage, but it was old, too big, and entirely in the wrong place. A complete garden re-design and transformation were required.

It seems that even with the excellent use of loft space and understairs cupboards, storage solutions for houses in Southwest London inevitably involves using garden space as well. However, this can soon overwhelm even a medium-sized garden.

As part of the planning process, the clients and the team decided to design the whole garden around a 3m x 2.4m apex garden shed placed in the left-hand corner. This worked well with the fall of light and allowed the garden to retain significant open space if we placed the new shed with the long 3m side facing the house.

We rapidly demolished the old garage and removed very old paving and warped decking. This left us with plenty of space for a raised bed seating feature, which we constructed down the right-hand side. The garden also benefited from another lower-raised flower bed on the left of the garden.

The choice of paving is vast, and in this project, the clients chose Brazilian slate. This worked exceptionally well with the colour scheme of the shed, flower beds, and fencing and allowed a decent-sized paved area outside the shed door.

The challenge with storage and sheds is that if you choose the wrong size, then the outbuilding can dominate the garden.

We are experts at advising clients on the optimal size of shed to include based on their garden dimensions. Obviously, the choice of shed is also important as there are many shapes in addition to size. If space allows, many also have their own porch and we can construct a small veranda to sit on during warm summer evenings. It is also easy to install electrical fittings in and around any shed or storage and make those a really nice evening feature.

With this Wimbledon project, the layout ensured that the shed was built into the design of the garden, and in this case, even though it was a considerable size, it did not dominate the overall space. Perfect!

Wimbledon Garden Design and Storage

To ensure this Wimbledon garden had the optimal contemporary look, we also installed pine cladding batten to the existing fences with downlighters at intervals on all sides. If your fencing is sound, then this is a great way to enhance the look without full replacement.

The last part of most projects involves surfaces and planting. We completed this Wimbledon project by laying a decent amount of premium quality artificial grass and expertly planted attractive easy-to-maintain plants in all the raised beds.
